This robot cleaner is my second Roomba and in comparison it is 1000% better than the old one from years ago. So if you had one of the first Roomba vacuums don’t judge the efficiency by that one.

My very first Roomba malfunctioned after a couple of years and I had to return to vacuuming with the big vac. We recently rescued a 2 yr old yellow lab who sheds with each step so I was constantly dragging out my big vacuum, While shoving that thing back and forth and wishing I was doing something else, I decided to try a robot vacuum cleaner again.

I tried a different brand thinking that Roomba’s price was too high and because of good reviews, unfortunately that ones does poorly on the area rug in the living room where I really needed to have hair picked up.

However it does a good job on my tile floors in the kitchen so I may keep it just to do those floors since it helps keep up with the dog hair and has a remote control that gives me some control over where it goes.

iRobot Roomba 960 does a good job on both carpet, hard surface floors to clean up dog hair and debris.
iRobot Roomba 960 cleans under my bed and couch that are more difficult to move around.
iRobot Roomba 960 has a very large bin to hold dirt and it was needed.
iRobot Roomba 960 has a handle to easily lift with one hand when I need to.
iRobot Roomba 960 is bigger and definitely more powerful than the one I had years ago and also the current competing brand that I have.
iRobot Roomba 960 can be started by pushing a button but the WIFI connection to and program on my iPhone works great and I love all the information it provides me
iRobot Roomba 960 can be scheduled for one time per day vacuuming.

Roomba can only be scheduled for one time per day of cleaning but can be used manually or by WIFI a second time or more.
iRobot Roomba 960 does not come with any cleaning tools but I have had no problems wiping the dust bin out and the rollers look easier to clean than a bristle brush
iRobot Roomba 960 does not have a remote control to let me guide the robot where I want it to go but over time I think it will clean all the areas that I want cleaned (that a robot cleaner can get too)

Just like dishwashers, even top of the line dishwashers, can not clean everything, neither can the Roomba. Just like with a dishwasher, there will be an occasional need for a person to do areas that dishwasher and robot vacuum can not do. As long as I remember that, I believe the Roomba will be a perfect robot to help me keep my home cleaner and clearer of dog hair.

I will probably run Roomba at least twice a day in our living room where the dog sheds on the carpet. I wish it could be scheduled for twice a day instead on one time per day but it is a small inconvenience.

UPDATE: After running this roomba at least twice daily, I must say I am pleased to see cleaner floors each day. I also run my cheaper ILIFE robot vacuum on the kitchen tiled floor to cut down on tracking dog hair into other rooms. NO ROBOT VACUUM can totally clean up dog hair as good as my old Shark cordless sweeper vacuum. Even after running Roomba 960 twice, there is still dog hair on my textured 8×10 rug. But, my little old Shark cleans up what Roomba leaves behind! When I replace one of my robot vacuums it will be with a Shark robot vacuum.

PET OWNERS- I’ve hesitated on posting this and what rating to give it. I do really like my roomba, and I’m running it daily. BUT we opted for the more expensive “pet friendly” version as we’d just ordered new carpet and wanted to keep the pet hair under control. Our roomba arrived the same day as the carpet. To be honest I have very hairy dogs with long hair and despite brushing and grooming hair is a fact of life in our home. So there is that, and I’m sure we are not alone. We should volunteer to be testers for iRobot as here’s what’s going on. 1) we noticed clumps of dog hair being left behind, so we have to follow around and pick up balls of fur, so started trying to figure that out. 2) we have to empty the bin at least twice during a full cleaning (guess we are dirtier than most as this is new carpet with roomba from day one). We do live in the country. 3) the rollers get hair wrapped around the ends and when I say wrapped, it’s a lot. I have a handful after clearing the rollers. I cleaned the rollers yesterday before running it, I had to clean them again this morning for example and you must remove them to clean out the ends.

Long time Roomba fan, disappointed in 960’s pet fur cleanup

I’ve enjoyed several generations of Roombas, and each one has been a greatly appreciated luxury. I have always been impressed with their ever-improving functionality (trustworthy obstacle and terrain navigation, reliable parts, proficient vacuum performance) and accepting of their necessary physical limitations (small bin size, limited battery life and motor power). Regular maintenance and a daily routine has always resulted in Roomba keeping the floors incredibly tidy in a household of long hair, a giant double-coated dog, and a medium-hair cat. It’s a little thing, but coming home after a 12 hour day at work to freshly cleaned carpets restores an inordinate amount of sanity. When I upgraded to the Roomba 960 after having the Roomba 650, I was especially excited for the new navigation sensors, WiFi update capability and improved monitoring software. Those were key in my choice to go for the considerably more spendy model. Those features have offered exactly what I was hoping for.

Love it!

My housekeeper vacuums the living room every other week, but here is what 10 minutes of the Roomba picked up. Love it!

Pretty Good But Poor Transition Ability

This is our second Roomba vacuum. The first unit was a 860 and we returned it because it could not transition from a hardwood floor to an area rug that is less than 1/2 inch thick. (see attached photos) We then purchased the 960 with the hopes it would be able to make the transition. The 960 will makes the transition about sixty percent of the time. To me that is unacceptable. I spoke with support about this issue and they told me it should be able to make the transition and they do not know why it is failing. The solution was to send me 4 virtual walls to block off the are rug and clean it separately from the hardwood floor. Not the best solution but better than nothing. When the unit is cleaning the hardwood and when it is able to make the transition onto the area rug it does a great job. We have a Rottweiler and it picks up her hair from the wood floor and the rug with no problems. The dust bin is a good size but I recommend a good manual cleaning prior to using the Roomba or the bin will fill up before it completes it’s cycle. I would suggest using the Roomba for maintenance cleaning on a daily basis. When it is running it is quieter than I expected but it is not quiet by any means.

Just like any other pet, requires some TLC, but at least he doesn’t soil the carpet.

Don’t get me wrong, I like Spot, as my wife has named our Roomba. He is noisy, but he’s a vacuum cleaner. He’s fun to watch. We limit him to the downstairs wood and tile floors. We tried a beacon under the Christmas tree, not sure if it worked or not, he got caught under the corner of the couch that night. We run him at 4:00 AM every morning. He does a great job of picking up medium size stuff and smaller. Large pieces of paper, pieces of wire tend to wrap around his wheels, and brushes. At that point he just stops and gives up. His little trash bin is full every morning, and he packs it in. He does a great job with daily sweep up type of duties. He isn’t going to give you a really deep clean. You will still need to come back and get the corners yourself later. But that’s a once a week type thing. If you want to have fun with him, play a game of guess where he will go next with him. I have yet to figure out the thought process he uses to decide where to go next. But he does a decent job. There is room for improvement though. 1. I want the ability to see on a map where he thinks he has cleaned and the path he took to get there. 2. larger trash bin 3.
